What annoys me in this regard is that I WANT to see something challenge Steam. Any REAL Steam competitor MUST have at least partial parity to Steam, at the VERY LEAST on social features. Without being fully featured, no client is going to touch Steam. If they, or anyone else wants to fight Steam, they have to compete on all fronts. Origin? Flaming pile of shit when it launched, although it's gotten better over the years, and generally, I think it handles downloads better (mostly because it auto-selects CDN servers far better than Steam), but it's still blindingly bright, and somewhat clunky. Uplay? It's basically been bloatware since it's inception, with basically no real value-added features. Clunky as hell now that it's supporting Activision's mainline games, too. They've redesigned it recently, but OH GOD is it bad for a UX standpoint. GoG Galaxy? Great idea, hell, closest to a proper Steam competitor there is, but it lacks polish, and the UI feels too big, and that lack of polish just makes it's downsides look worse.ī? Built for Blizzard games, and shoehorned into supporting more than WoW, SC2, HOTS, and Diablo 3. Sometimes they work decently enough, sometimes they even have aspects that are better than Steam, but almost all of them are less convenient, less feature-rich, and less easy to use. How many times did I just randomly lose everyone on my friends list? I can't really say, but it was almost a monthly occurrence.Īfter a few years though, it stabilized, and became a platform I enjoyed using, with sales that drove me to use it more than most other platforms (not that there were any other platforms worth using at the time, GoG was only JUST starting to be a thing). If you look at all the platforms that have come up to challenge Steam, there's a single, unifying thread between all of them: They're half-baked, missing features, and often just plain ugly. I remember the bad old days, around the time Steam had initially implemented chat and a friends list. In the beginning, it was pretty shit, yes. It's just that Steam got in on the ground level, literally building the first GOOD digital download service for PC games.Yeah, we had a few before, like Direct2Drive, but most of them absolutely sucked, and had no management interface except for downloading the full game over HTTP and PRAY that your connection doesn't drop for more than a second in the 2-4 hours it takes to download said game.īut Steam was on another level. Nothing stops a new platform from emerging, nothing at all. Fortunately for us, they're REALLY BAD at chess.īut more amusingly, that a better model exists, and that they've proven it to be theirs, in addition to the idea that Steam is a monopoly. So many of these are just plain silly, particularly the bits where they're trying to say their player base isn't a pawn here, I mean, look at how they've weaponized the Fortnite community.
